What To Expect...

If you are new to therapy, you have taken the first step in creating positive change in your life. Coming to therapy can be scary but knowing what to expect can help you get the most out of your experience and help create the positive changes you are looking for.

The Therapy Process:

Beginning Phase

The first couple of sessions allow you to share with your therapist what is happening in your life and what changes you would like to see. Your therapist will have questions for you about your experience as they get to know you. Together you will develop a treatment plan outlining the goals you wish to see in your life. This part of therapy typically takes 1-3 sessions. You will be working closely with your therapist and we want this to be a good fit for you. If for any reason you do not feel it is a good fit, please let us know, as there is not one therapist for everybody. If you and your therapist find that you are a good fit, we ask that you offer a verbal commitment to follow through with the treatment process by attending regular weekly appointments. At the end of the first session it is recommended that you schedule weekly sessions for the next 6 weeks. This will help you in getting a time that works for you to attend therapy.

Middle Phase
To get the most out of therapy, most people come at least 10 times on a weekly basis to get the results they are looking for. In the beginning of treatment you may feel relief right away or no change at all; this is normal. After a few sessions, you may find that you are tempted to not come anymore because therapy isn’t easy and it can take time and hard work. Some people may feel worse while working through painful things or frustrated that change isn’t coming quickly enough. This too is normal. This is where it is important to keep coming, as this is where more lasting change is created. The change you hope for requires these phases of treatment. Don’t give up. Therapy is a process. Please discuss any of these feelings with your therapist.  Your therapist will be checking in with you along the way to ensure that you are getting what you are looking for out of therapy.

Ending Phase
It is important to attend a closing session with your therapist. During this session, your therapist will provide feedback and recommendations that will set you up for lasting success as you complete therapy.
